Getting laid off:

I was working at Comcast for about eleven months and was starting to really hate it. Everyday my boss would get more and more annoying and the customers were very mean and irate. On Monday my boss was very nice and wasn’t bothering anyone or listening to any calls. I didn’t think anything of it since she used to be nice in the beginning. Then we were called for a meeting. They told us we were being outsourced and everyone was being laid off in my department. I felt relieved I didn’t have to work but was shocked that they didn’t give us a two weeks notice since they expect us to do so when we quit. The young people working there didn’t care because they didn’t have anything to pay and we could find a part time job anywhere but the older ones did. There were many moms with kids they had to support and bills they have to pay. This made me realize that big company don’t care about there workers just about their profit. I think it was unfair what they did because you need at least a week to look for another job.

Stop loss:

Stop loss was a great movie and I recommend everyone watch it. It shows what the soldiers feel when they get stop loss and the affect it has on their family members. After watching this movie it made me think if this could actually happen. Since it’s just a movie, and movies exaggerate I decided to de some research. I found out that stop loss happens exactly like that and I was shocked. After reading blogs from soldiers and family member and actually talking to one of my dads friends son that just came back from Iraq I decided to do my research paper topic on this. While researching I found out almost no one agrees with this and this was a very controversial subject.

The Whale Rider

I thought this movie was very entertaining. I liked the way Paika proved to everyone that she could be a great leader. I did not like the grandfather in the movie, I thought he was very selfish, hardheaded and mean. I also didn’t like the way no one stood up for paika because they respected the grandfather too much. On the other hand, I really enjoyed when the uncle thought Paika how to fight with the stick and how she was able to save the whale at the end when no one else could. Overall the movie was great and I wouldn’t mind seeing it over.

“Television Addiction”:

Television addiction is a very interesting topic. Many people don’t really think they are addicted to the television. I thought I watched TV just as much as everyone else and I thought it was normal. When we raised our hands in class to see how many hours a day we watched TV I was shocked. I think I watch TV too much so I decided to cut down on it and do other things that are more active and more useful. I’m not really addicted to a particular show; I just watch whatever is on. Instead of just watching TV I have decided to study and work out since its a lot more beneficial then watching TV while laying down and eating junk food.

“Territorial Behavior”:

I thought this story was very realistic. I think everyone can relate to at least one of the territorial behaviors. In this story Desmond Morris discusses the three types of territorial behaviors. There is Tribal Territory which deals with pride in your state like the flag or a sports team. Then there is Family Territory which is decorating your house or room depending on your culture and way of living. Lastly, there is Personal space which is a distance a person feels comfortable in. I think all three of them people use without noticing.

“I have a Dream”

I think this speech is marvelous. I enjoy reading and listening to it. I think Martin Luther king J.R was a great speaker and it shows in his work. This speech was written such a long time ago and is something people are still reading today. This speech really changed the way people look at racism and it really made a difference in the world. Martin Luther King was a great leader and spoke really sincere and really cared about humanity. After seeing the speech and seeing how many people showed up to watch him talk was amazing. It shows he was very powerful because there was whites and black together listening to the speech.

“Cinematypes”:

I think this story was humorous. I thought it was very funny how she was trying to look for the perfect guy and they all had something wrong. At the end she ended up going to the movies by herself and was a lot better then going with any of those guys. I think the dates were a little extreme but I do think things like that happen. Many people are trying to look for the perfect person and I don’t think that exists. I think you should just find someone that kind of matches what your looking for and then adjust.

“Sexism in English”:

I found this story was very interesting. It is very true and pretty sad how society looks at things. Even though society is becoming a little more open minded, it is still quite sexist. According to the text, women are passive and men are Active. I don’t agree with this. I think women and men are equal in the ability to work and be active. Many women as well as men have equal jobs and work in the same place. It also states that women are sexy and men are successful, in which I also don’t agree with. I know many women who are just as successful or even more successful then men. There are also many men who are models. This shows that women and men are equal it’s just how society looks at it and twists it around.

“Why we crave horror movies"

I thought this story was very interesting. I think Stephen King is a very creative writer and I enjoy reading his stories. Most of his stories are about horror and are a little twisted. I don’t like watching scary movies because I have really bad night mares and I hate being in suspense. But this story was very funny and a bit true. Even though I don’t like watching horror movies, I think everyone can relate a little to it. I don’t think everyone is totally sane because if they were I don’t think creativity would exist.

“Neat people VS sloppy people”:

I think this story was very humorous. It was obvious that the author was in favor of sloppy people. It was very funny how she described neat people as bums and clods at heart and sloppy people as heavenly versioned with a precise plan. I think I lean more towards the neater side, even though I get a little lazy and sloppy sometimes. I always have my room neat and organized. But on the other hand, my computer room is never organized and there is always a bunch of scrap booking stuff everywhere.

“Slice of Life”:

I truly enjoyed this story. I thought it was really funny. The purpose of this story was to entertain and that is exactly what it did. I thought the directions that were given on how to cook a turkey were hilarious. The way the ingredients and the directions came together was comical. The instructions were very extreme and I don’t think anyone will actually follow the. Well I hope no one does. This is a funny story that can be shared in thanksgiving when the family is gathered together cooking the feast.

“How to give orders like a man”:

I didn’t really like this story because I don’t really agree with it. I think the only time you should speak to someone directly is when you are speaking to a dog. I believe it is important to speak indirectly. When you speak indirectly it shows respect and it is a lot nicer. I think people speak directly because it makes them feel superior and gives them power. In most cases the other person feels less then you and it can cause conflict. I don’t think there could be a good communication if someone speaks directly to you. I think both people need to be on the same page.

Garage Parking

My boyfriend and I always stay at his beach apartment in the weekends. The parking garage there is very small and the space to park the car is really tight. The person who parks next to us is always parked wrong and takes up a lot of our tiny space. One night my boyfriend got really upset and wrote a note on their car. He wrote “Please have some consideration in parking. Thank you” The note worked and they started parking well. Then, one night when we were leaving we saw who the car belonged to and felt really bad about the note. The car belonged to a really old lady that was very nice.

“Why don’t we complain?”

This has been my favorite story so far because it was hilarious and I think everyone can relate to it. I am the type of person who doesn’t like to complain because I don’t want the other person to feel bad or embarrassed. I also don’t let my boyfriend complain because everything always bothers him and he always complains about the smallest things. I feel that he needs to have more patience and think about the result it he would have if he were to complain. I think people are always complaining and it shows a solidness and impatience.

“Marrying Absurd”:

I liked the way the author described the Las Vegas weddings. The different stories were really funny. From reading the essay, the author shows his view of the Las Vegas weddings. He describes them as quick, simple and very realistic. The author begins to talk about the weddings being a joke. He explains how you just have to be eighteen and pay a fee. This is how it really is in Las Vegas. I agree with the author in the sense that there is no religion aspect and the people are getting married just for fun. I think if there were to put little more rules in the marriages there will be less marriages and a lot less divorces.

“Salvation”:

I really enjoyed this story because it was humorous and very entertaining. I like how Langston took it literally when they told him that Jesus will come for him. He waited and waited to see if Jesus will come for him and when he realized Jesus never came he was incredibly disappointed. I felt that the grandmother was being to hard on him. She was treating him as if he was an adult and he was just a kid. I think things like that actually happen in real life because some don’t know how to explain certain things to children and kids take everything literally.

College

What do you expect from your college experience?
The most important thing I expect from my college experience is knowledge. Even though I am enrolled for a degree, I think knowledge is more important. I wish to learn as much as I can about diffrent subjects, not only the major ones like math and science but diverse ones like philosophy and pshycology, which deals with life and the way humans think. On the other hand,I would like to earn a degree to further my leaning and my long term goal.
